Google drops tax abatement request for proposed Hermantown Data Center
Google is no longer seeking a real property tax abatement for its proposed data center in Hermantown. City officials say the project could generate more than $240 million in property tax revenue for the region over the next 20 years, and Google will work with local leaders on other ways to support the school district.

By October 16th, 2026; Google will have completed the installation of a baseline groundwater monitoring network. This includes four pairs of dual-depth groundwater wells along the project perimeter, drilled to depths of 50 and 90 feet, as well as eight shallow monitoring wells adjacent to the wetland complexes in the Northeast and Southeast portions of the proposed development property. Prior to construction, these wells will collect data to establish an environmental baseline. Monitoring will continue throughout the construction process, with regular updates reported directly to the City Council to ensure full transparency and ongoing protection of local wetlands and neighboring wells.
